Default 98 Ranger 3.0, starts than dies.

*Sorry for the longer read*

Got the truck yesterday, drove it about 15 minutes from where I had purchased it, drove great seemed like there was no issues except maybe an exhaust leak.

Started fine yesterday after one failed crank.

Now, it will idle for 2 seconds and stall out. Also check engine light had popped on, alongside the check gage and battery. It is automatic.

I had checked the airbox just to see if i had to clean it and yup. Ton of leaves and crap so i cleaned it all out and changed the filter.

Still, no start. I hear it could be anything from the IAC, to oil pressure switch or fuel lines. I dont think it is oil though since there is no oil light in and it jumps right up to half way on the start, plus there is a new oil filter and the oil is new.

Theres a ton of updated stuff, will list things that i think could have affected this issue:

Coolant Temp Sensor is new
New Sparks and Wires
New Fuel Filter

Just curious as to where I should start. I know that I will have to pick up a scanner monday though however to make this process a bit easier.

Agree with checking the engine code(s) thrown, I'm also wondering if you hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key to start (but don't actually try starting the engine). New fuel filter has me thinking the pump may be bad and they tried to band-aid it with a new filter...

I have checked the codes the other day, had made another post about it.

Regardless I ended up with P0171 and P0174.

Here is the other post: 1998 DTC Codes

Long post? Clearly you've not lurked on here long enough to find any of MY LONG posts...

Anyway.. If you hadn't gone as far to look up the codes;

Code P0174 indicates that there is a lean condition detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM). A lean condition will be created if there is too much air, and not enough fuel, in the air fuel ratio (AFR).

Code P0171 means that, on the first bank of the engine, the fuel system is running weak or a vacuum leak exists near this side of the engine. A lean condition occurs when the engine either receives too little fuel or too much air.

I would perform a fuel pressure test after checking every rubber line or plastic line leading to the intake/fuel system. Take careful measure to check each end and UNDER the hoses or lines..

Also check Voltage at the fuel pump and the Relay output, if its at 12v. but you hear the pump dieing off as or before the truck shuts off, you could have a bad fuel pump.

IF it's the pump, you dont have to spend an arm and a leg and taking a 2nd on a left testicle but dont buy the cheapest thing you can or a brand you or anyone else isn't familiar with. Taking the fuel system apart should be a fix and go another 10-20 years not another repair in a year or two...
