Unhappy Ranger danger!

I need some help with my Ford Ranger Xlt 3.0 v6 4x4. It wont really get over 3000 rpms. It is an automatic. While accelerating it hits about 3000rpm and seems to lose power then, wont accelerate very much after that. If I turn the over drive off while doing 45+ and floor it, it will get above 3000rpm.

Some people have told me to take the catylic converter off and put straight pipes on because it was putting too much back pressure on the engine.

Some have said its the fuel filter, I personally don't see how a clogged fuel filter would do that kind of thing to it. It's getting the gas it needs for the most part. Just feels week in the acceleration department! Is the fuel pressure valve bad??

I have already replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, air/oil filters and oil. Spark plugs where so gummed up when I got it I don't even know how it was running. Help??????

it could be a plugged up exhuast system, but it can also be bad timing or you could be running to rich or lean

So should I try taking off the C.Converter and going straight pipe?

Before you go ripping stuff out I would try and find exactly what the problem is. Seafoam might be a good idea and a fuel filter is cheap and easy so it might be worth a try as well. What year is your truck and how many miles does it have?

Its a 1998 Ranger Xlt 4x4 3.0 V6 I put seafoam in it. I changed the fuel filter. Gave it an all around tune up, plugs, plug wires, oil, oil filter, air filter, new tires. Still once I get up around 40+ it hits 3000 rpm and stays there and accelerates very slow. Its 120,000 miles as of tues (7-26-10)

The C.Converter looks all rusted up. Like the seams are starting to come apart its so bad.

There are no lights on. Thats what is confusing me so much about it. I'm not really a car mechanic. I'm a Harley Technician so I know the basics of the engine valves cams all that stuff, not so much the cats and pressure running back off that. Harleys are just straight pipes. some have baffles haha. That why I need every ones help here so dearly! Would going to a Flow-master instead of that rusted hunk of junk improve my condition?

you obviosly checked that the CEL comes on when you turn the key to run..........i would get a code reader and see if you can catch a pending code.......it never hurts to know what your fuel pressure is?
