Default Diagnosis?

P0305- Misfire Cylinder 5 I had this code for about 4-6 months just steady light unless I let the truck idle long then it would flash. So now that it’s finally warmed up here, and I finally got a better schedule with work I decided I was gonna change brakes and mess with it yesterday. Well I may have found more than I can handle. I checked spark it’s good, checked injector by ohms and flipped cylinder 5 to cylinder 4 with the code not moving, and I checked compression with cylinder 5 being at like 90 psi and 4 being at close to 150 if I done the test right. What would be the next step?

Do a compression test across all 6 cylinders (I know, what a fun afternoon that's gonna be..) After that..if you can..do a leak-down test. That low #5 makes my inner-greasemonkey worry a tad..

If you're convinced it's ignition related, a new coil pack, plugs (properly gapped motorcrafts, please...these trucks seem to run best on OEM plugs) and wires are your best friend.

Additionally, your misfire could be caused by a blown head gasket. (I had a similar #6 misfire that I couldn't track down, til a leak-down test revealed it.)

Things worth considering, at any rate.
Keep us posted, amigo, and best of luck!

Default Re: Diagnosis?

I had brand new plugs and wires on it. Anyhow this turned into a complete tear down I guess. I drive over a pretty steep mountain to the mine here every day and on my way to work yesterday I heard a loud pop and that’s all she wrote. I hated to drive the truck but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I guess I’ll look into it this weekend. There aren’t very many 3.0s around me here but I have a friend with a 2002 4.0 2WD Ext Cab without the back doors with a blown engine and a 2005 4.0 4x4 ext cab with the doors. I’d love to take the two and make a 4x4 before winter time, but I’m not sure if the two would be compatible.
