Alright I seen this question multiple times but have yet to find an answer to fix it so I figured I would ask again.
My oil pressure gauge bounces, only after the engine has ran for a while and is warm. I have replaced the oil pressure switch as well as the cam syncronizer. Did the cam sync because it had a cel. either way neither fixed my issue. Truck runs and drives just fine but as soon as I give it gas the gauge returns to normal which makes me believe its not electrical and that pressure is spiking up and down at idle when warm. Oil is not low . If it was a pump issue I would assume it would be worse when cold than warm.
Seems alot of folks have the same issue and curious if anyone has figured it out yet? This bouncing drives me crazy.
I would agree it doesn't sound electrical. When oil gets warm it thins out and creates less pressure, and running it at a higher rpm turns the pump quick enough to make pressure. To me it sounds like a pump degradation issue especially if truck is higher mileage. To verify you can put a manual gauge on it and check warm vs cold oil psi.

Those are called idiot gauges. The gauge will read nothing or halfway if there is 7 psi of oil pressure. The gauge should not move from half scale once 7 psi is achieved. The problem is the sensor or the gauge itself and if the oil pressure is actually bouncing from zero to half scale the engine would be grinding and you would know something is wrong.
What I would do is pull your sensor, go to your local truck shop/hardware store/anywhere that sells brass, for a fitting that matches the sensor threads and will go to whatever gauge/hose your using might take a few fittings to get ya there. (Rember to take the sensor & gauge/hose with, don't ask how I know) if you don't have a gauge I know farm and fleet, tractor supply had (at one point in time) gauges for a fair price
