After taking the cylinder heads off, I found unusual black residue on the piston heads and on/around the valves. It looks like old, peeling paint. I know some amount of carbon buildup in the cylinders is normal, but I've never seen it form large flakes like this.

Is this just normal carbon buildup, or something else?

Looks like an engine that has sat for a very long time.

It's been sitting since June, so that checks out. What causes it?

Just dried gas carbon, nothing to worry about, before putting the heads back on put a little automatic trans oil in each cyl.

carbon buildup.. this is what happens when you dont open it up once and a while on the highway

I told my son,you got to blow the cobwebs out of it! Every time I bought a used car I would take it to the interstate, take it through the gears and blow the cobs webs out of it.It would blow smoke out of the tail pipe and idle and purr like a kitten. He does ever car he gets too!
