Default 1998 V6 3.0 Auto Transmission shifting issues

Hi everyone. Needing some assistance. My truck is actually a 1998 Mazda B3000 with the v6 automatic, so it's the same as a Ranger from what I have read online.

It has 114K miles on it, owned it for about 4 months. No issues until now. Last week I was driving home and it started shifting hard when going from 1st to 2nd gear. Then, from stop light to stop light it would not want to shift in to 2nd until high revs (maybe 4K RPM). Then as I was driving in 2nd gear getting up to speed, it would drop out of gear automatically. I limped home and haven't driven it since.

I checked the trans fluid, correct level and looks pretty clean. Any idea's where I should start? Really don't want to take it to a mechanic unless I have to. Thank you.

I don’t know enough about transmissions to give you a definitive answer, but I’ll give it a shot. Please keep that in mind with my response.

From what you’re describing there could be a fee things going on due to the varied scenarios in which it shows. However I’d be tempted to wonder about the solenoids and the valve body. Were/are you able yo pull any codes from the truck? That may help with diagnosis

Hi. I was able to find some youtube videos that showed it could be the transmission control converter solenoid.

I didn't see any lights or errors on the dash. Are you saying I should test it with a DTC and see what it says? Also, the valve body - what are you referring to? Thank you.

Being a 1998, it should be OBD2 meaning there could be some codes stored in the computer which relate to the transmission. A basic code reader won’t be able to read these, only engine/emissions codes. I *think* a scangauge unit could do this but you need to check. If it’s the converter solenoid you may have to pull the transmission anyway (I presume) so you may want to consider a freshening anyway. Best bet is to get it checked if you don’t know enough about it, like me. Maybe it’s time for a manual?

On a side note, prior to my Ranger I swore I’d never have another Ford automatic after having three go out from under me shortly after purchase. My 4-speed won’t be in for long, A 5.0 conversion will make sure of that.

Sounds like a selinoid problem! Try manually changing gears. If that works then it's more than likely a selinoid. It's not hard at all to access your valve body. But if you attempt this repair. Make sure you take pictures .The 17 screws that hold the valve body are different lenths
