Default What does this sound mean? Video.

Engine was rebuild for second time in Oct 2018 by shop. Driving down hwy today I look down and no oil pressure. Take foot off gas. Engine dies. Coasting I put in neutral and restarts but is making some kind of noise. I pull over. Temperature is normal no smoke or overheating. Some kind of knocking. Oil is down 2 quarts. I put in 2 quarts and brought level up to normal. Truck starts fine but I decide to have it towed. It was driving perfectly fine this morning until this happened. Can anyone tell me what this sound is? Total rebuild again or is it something else? Here is a of what it sounds like.

The truck did not overheat. If only two quarts low and no heat or smoke how could there be damage?

That would be the sound of an engine running without oil pressure...

Ok. Yep the oil pressure indicator shows no pressure. Does that mean there is damage or could the engine be ok as it was not driven long without pressure. Or is there no way to know until mechanic looks at it. Thanks!

It only takes seconds to destroy the bearings on an engine with no oil pressure. No way to say what went wrong or how bad it is until its checked out. I would definitely advise against starting it again...

Yes I towed it straight to the mechanic. I am just trying to figure out if it’s going to need a new rebuild or something less costly.

Why would you have to pay for the rebuild since it was overhauled only 5 months ago? Did a real shop rebuild the engine or was it done by Bubba in his back yard?

A real shop rebuilt the engine in may of 2017. Had constant problems. Took back 8 times in next year. In oct of 2018 another mechanic did a leak down check and showed the head gasket and a valve was cracked. The origin shop redid the head gasket and made the repair. They said that as this did not sound like it had anything to do with the previous engine repair 5 months ago which was warranty work. So they are saying it is no longer under warranty.

----------

Ok I took out the camshaft syncrozation sensor and 4 of the teeth are broken off. This would cause oil pressure to drop to zero. Can I just put in new sensor and see if it works or do I need to take things apart to see if camshaft is damaged or if broken teeth are floating around?

This issue is 110% absolutely related to the rebuild. When the engine was "rebuilt" they obviously did not service the cam syncro and bushings which is ansolute critical step 1 on a vulcan 3.0. They obviously failed to torque the heads properly as well. They were either cheap, dumb, lazy or any combination of the three. You could try slapping a new one in but A, there are chunks of synchro gear in your engine so you need to get them out somehow. (They may come out with an oil flush). and B, the damage from running with no oil pressure is done. It may run but you absolutely have internal damage. How much and how bad can't be known without opening the engine up. Ive seen engines seize solid into boat anchors in as little as 2 minutes when oil pressure is lost. Like I said, it may run but it may be running on bearings with 100 miles of life left in them. Who knows.

What you do from here is your choice. I'd fight the mechanic for a new engine or cost of another rebuild and have the actual work done somewhere else.

I appreciate that. They offered a 12 month warrenty and then did fix the head gasket and head after the warranty was over. As it has been almost 2 years since the initial work I don’t think I would have much standing in court. I agree it is ridiculous. That an engine should fail like that in less than 2 years. I may talk to my lawyer about it. I called them and they said I could bring by but would have to pay for an evulation. At that point they were the last people I would want to take to.

I spoke to another mechanic and he listened to the engine. He said it was good that I was able to get off the road in 60 seconds. Said there was no knocking in engine. The sound was just the top half running without oil. So maybe I should just take off oil pump and oil pan and see if there are any shavings in pan. Maybe just pull engine and break it down. This mechanic said he would look at all parts and tell me if there was any damage and if so what to replace. If there was no damage then I would guess I could put back together without machining as it was so recently rebuilt? If there was some damage then maybe I could just replace damaged parts.

From what you are saying sounds like breaking it down is the safest bet to see what is what.

I wouldn't say a complete teardown is necessary but definitely an internal inspection. Popping the valve covers and oil pan off is a good idea. You need to get the broken synchro gear out anyway. Take a rod cap off and look at the bearing. If the rod bearings look good then the rest of the bearings are probably also fine (rod bearings tend to go first). Check the valvetrain for any visible damage, do a wet/dry and leakdown compression check to make sure the rings and valves are still good.

If everything checks out, throw the new synchro on and youre ok. My point is just, without a good inspection you have no idea if you have a boat anchor or just an engine that got a bit scorched.

I doubt it would need machining in any case. New rod/crank bearings is a possibility but if it didnt seize theres little chance the cylinder walls were damaged.

Hi DirtmanL
To remove oil oan on redranger45's Vulcan v6 3.0 does one have to remove or loosen engine mounts and then jack the engine up to get clearance to remove pan?
I've removed pan on my explorer but it's an OHV v6 4.0----not a 3.0 Vulcan.
curious and thanks for the previous explanation about how oil starves the rods first.
this shade tree mechanic did not know that

So my brother and I took out the engine, took off pan and took pan and oil pump to shop where they took the oil pump apart to see about severe etc. they said the pump was fine and saw no debree in oil pan. They recommend putting in new sync, new oil pump and shaft to be safe. I did. Motor craft sync and melining pump. We removed valve covers but saw no debree or damage. I put the new pump in a vat of new oil to lubricate and prime oil pump before instal. The truck runs fine, starts right up, but now is making a sound which I assume is knocking. So I’m taking out again.going to tear all the way down this time. Taking block to shop to clean and instal new cam bearings. I’ll put in new main bearings. This is my first rebuild. Do I basically just look at all the parts to see if there is damage? It’s the original cam. If it is not damaged do I just get standard cam and main bearings? I notice they list standard and then several other choices. Should I check engine compression as it is knocking? If so can I do that on stand or does it need to be in truck? Can shop tell by looking at pistons and cylinders if there is damage? Thanks!

find a good used motor!! don't get that junk rebuilt. Sounds like a lifter knock, don't waste the time on it.. DRIVE IT TIL IT BLOWS MEANWHILE LOOK FOR REPLACEMENT

For the amount of times you've aparently had this motor "fixed" and torn apart I think you should cut your losses.... junk the trunk, or buy a new engine.

In my brother, Redranger45's defense, I have advocated him tearing the motor down, having a local trusted machine shop examine all the components, and go from there. That costs him nothing but time, as this is not his daily driver. I think it is imperative that he see for himself what this internal parts of this engine look like- even if he goes another route (replacement engine)- so that in the future he can assess for himself say the difference in very loud top end noise vs. say rod knocking (he might have both).
