I have a 2001 auto with a 3.0. Had intermittent no start. Now my son was driving it and it died. It now has no start, wont turn over, and the OBD2 reader wont connect. Please help.

Well lets start with the basics... Is the battery good/charged? Whats the voltage and age? Do any other accessories come on? Interior lights, head lights etc?

Next check the fuses and relays, with no obd port power check fuses for the ecm.

Next move on to battery connections, bad grounds especially. Battery ground to block but also ground straps from the engine to the body.

Isn't the OBD2 port on the same fuse as the lighter?

Your reference circuit may be shorted. Check one of the 3 wire sensors (TPS is easy) and you should have 5 volts on atleast 1 of them. If not, you may have a shorted sensor somewhere pulling the 5V from the PCM regulator to ground. This will make communication at the data port impossible.

Good battery. Good battery connections. The switch relay clicks when i turn the switch but the starter relay dont. Checked relays. They are good. All lights and radio work and fan. When i connected the scanner it said turn on ignition or check connection. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it. I just dont know the ranger electronic systems well. Just for background. It had started running rough a month ago and when i put the reader on it, it said number 4 and 6 cylinder missfire. Then my son had to drive it and it died.
