I believe that the exterior of the block is the same throughout the years for RWD. There were many internal changes, but that doesn't matter. You will most likely have a mismatch with the connector for the coil pack. The way the coil bolts to the manifold is different and your old coil won't bolt up to the "new" engine manifold. The engine mounts for an auto trans are different than a 5 speed.
I did an engine swap (cam synchronizer failed) on my '99 5 speed with an engine from a '01 auto. Used the original engine wire harness. Swapped intake manifolds so the '99 coil would bolt on.
