Default Oil filter change on 3.0 V6

I have just changed oil in my 3.0 V6 Ranger 2wd. I like to change oil hot to get the max junk out. Changing the oil filter is a problem hot or cold. I remember thinking the last time I changed oil, that I should sell the truck before it needed it's next oil change, because it is such a pain to change. But I am old enough that stuff slips my mind.

The steering column is too close to the engine to lift the filter up. I sort of emptied the filter through the cut out in the control arm into my drip pan, laid the filter down on the control arm and moved it back until it would fit under the steering column and could be lifted up. Of course, I dribbled oil all over the control arm and my driveway. I spent a fair amount of time trying to find a way to remove it from under the truck but did not find a better way. I'll bet the dealers are tempted to just not change the filter. There is a plastic piece under the filter, but I have not been able to figure out what it's function is. Can anyone enlighten me?

Are you referring to the piece that diverts the oil from draining onto the starter?

That could be what the plastic piece is for. I wouldn't think a little oil would hurt a starter, but maybe the windings are open for better cooling.

I find changing the oil filter quite easy. I get at it from the top where I think there is plenty of room. Then there is that plastic/rubber funnel looking thing that catches all the oil from the filter area that works well for me.

I love changing the oil filter. I have gotten very good at treating burns from the exhaust headers on my hands and forearms and the starter stays super well lubricated as does my garage floor! I am so glad FoMoCo provided all these freebie benefits. They obviously put a lot of thought into the location of the filter.
Those wimps who can easily reach the filter don't know what they are missing!

If you change it that hot you're gonna burn you hands taking the drain plug out, unless you got one of those fancy, just turn the valve an let it run. Also a hot filter isn't going to be any kind of nice to handle, weather its in a good place or not. I let mine cool enough that the manifold doesn't burn my arm, and from the top, a piece of cardboard under the truck keeps spilled oil off the floor.

Obviously, I was being facetious but it is a difficult location.

I enjoyed your sense of humor. I'll try to remember to read your post right before my next oil change, to get me in the right frame of mind.
