Default New guy with a problem...

Hey, first post be gentle...

4th Ranger...first one ever to give me any issue whatsover.

Bought a 2002 XLT4x2 SUPERCAB 3.0 with 94k on it. Gorgeous truck, 3" suspension lift and 31's. Drove fine for a month or so...then CEL comes on. Zero driveability issues. Previous owner stated he had it throw a couple of EVAP codes but had them cleared and had not come back. I had no codes for 1000 miles.

Then CEL light comes on driving on highway. Again zero driveabilty issues.

Do a oil, filter and air filter change and tire rotation.

Had a great idea to clean under hood as it was a little dirty. Degreased and hosed it down. Fired it up and drove it dry. Then drove 8 Miles to work zero issues.

Next day when driving home it "hiccuped" at a light and died. Restarted fine and ran good until next light. Would not maintain an idle. Idles fluctuations up and down until idle got so low it died. Had to restart and put in neutral and fam throttle to keep it lit and then shift and go.

Took the IAC valve off, cleaned and reinstalled...nada...

Replaced IAC valve and seemed to do better. Idle got better but not perfect. Idle was at 4-600 rpm ( IMHO too low ).

Drove to Autozone pulled codes

P0442
P1504. IAC VALVE REPLACED TODAY
P1121. TPS SENSOR REPLACED TODAY. (MAF SENSOR ON ORDER)
P1132
P1152

Note on code printout says,

ASE Certified Master Technicians have seen this issue on your type of vehicle and the most likely solution is: REPLACE EVAPORATIVE EMMISSIONS (EVAP) VENT CONTROL VALVE.

EVAP VENT CONTROL VALVE ON ORDER...

Any ideas guys?

Default Re: New guy with a problem...

I just had a year of issues with my 3.0 which, after fixing all the routine maintenance issues and the one major problem, it decided to act up on idle, especially at start up. You hit all the big causes but I figure what is left is PCV Valve, especially the vacuum line that goes to it. The elbow on the older models has a tendency to collapse. It does sound like a vacuum leak somewhere, could be the plastic intake plenum. I have also heard that low A/C pressure can effect idle.
