Default extremely high idle 97 3.0

1997 Ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed 91000 miles
I know there has been a lot of threads talking about high idle issues. I've read most of them and nothing I have done has found my problem. Intermittent starting issues hot or cold. Loss of power and pinging while going uphill or under a load. Very High revving between shifting. The rpms will go as high as 3500 and hold. This happens hot or cold, dry or damp weather. I've replaced my IAC with a Motorcraft CX1855, replaced the ECM with an updated refurbished Ford ECM, replaced the TPS, replaced the coolant temp switch, replaced the ignition coil as well as plugs and wires. Replaced the EGR tube because of a leak (factory only) and expensive. Replaced the CAT (420 code) and that O2 sensor. Checked for vacuum leaks. Checked and lubed the throttle linkage. Checked and cleaned the throttle body. Checked and cleaned the MAP sensor. My next step is replacing the Vapor purge solenoid as well as both down tube O2 sensors. I may even replace my existing factory spec thermostat with a 180 dergree stat. After the ECM was replaced the truck ran awesome but after a few days here comes the check engine light and all back to running like crap. I also have a slight skip at low idle. Anyone else with some advice before I give in to having it serviced at the dealer will be most appreciated.

Don't remember the code # but it was bank 1 and bank 2 lean, vapor cannistor solenoid. The remedy was to look for a vac leak

That I believe would have it idle horribly with obvious loss of power. Don't think it would cause a high rev. My idle is just a slight skip. Nothing major. Thank you for your input. I will check the EGR just in case

Check everything related to vacuum, I had the same issue before and had a few things to correct and included the IAC hasket, egr stucked, purge solenoid cracked where the thinner hose that comes from the plennum attach to it and a broken cannister. I did'nt raplace anithing, just replaced the gaskets, cleaned the egr, sealed the solenoid crack with epoxy and sealed the cannister. Pepboys estimated around 500.00 becouse of the codes.
Good luck

So the irony is I just dealt with this myself. The last couple days I'll be driving all of a sudden I feel a odd sensation in the throttle to where it feels as though the gas pedal is stuck., same 3200-3500 RPM. Sometimes I can gauge traffic or lights, shut the truck off, turn the key to ON and pop the clutch in 2nd or 3rd gear and it'll straighten out. I did seem to sense that with the A/C on, it happened more often myself.

Today it did it again. Was far enough behind traffic to pull into a parking lot and pop the hood. i left it screaming at 3200 RPM's..

Pulled TPS - NO change
Pulled IAC - dropped maybe 400-500 RPMs
Played with the throttle cable, all smooth both directions

Then for what ever reason I mistakenly pulled the throttle plate mechanism opposite of itself and it clicked/popped into place and it settled. Messed with it again and got it to stick again - near 3k RPM.

Again pulled throttle mechanism and watched it pop back into place and it was normal for the remainder of the day. I picked up a can of throttle body cleaner on the way home so I can clean it out tomorrow good. But the TB or TB plate seems to be my issue.

Not sure how relative it is to your situation or to what extent you cleaned you TB but may want to check that again if you're not getting a code at all, its mechanical not a sensor issue perhaps.

Thanks for your Post Undrstm8ed. A thorough meticulous cleaning of the throttle body is what I'm doing next. Couple days ago I replaced both pre CAT O2 sensors and the purge solenoid hoping this would solve my high rev issue but if anything it made it worse. Getting to point of its just unsafe to drive until I get this thing fixed. Def not a sensor issue its time to look at mechanical issues. Thanks again for your post!
