Default Mini Spool in 8.8?

Ive got a 96 3.0 3.73 5sp. Around 250k on it. Wondering if it would be ok to mini spool it? Advantages? Disadvantages? Not really looking to spend a lot and really don't wanna weld it up.

What are your plans for the truck? Is it a daily driver? Weekend warrior? Offroad use only?

If it sees any measurable street time, I️ don’t think I’d want to put a spool in it. That’s gonna put a lot of strain on things, wear tires like crazy, and make it a handful when it’s wet or snowy.

If you’ve gotta have it locked on a budget, I️ think a lunch box locker would be a better option. At least then it wouldn’t be locked ALL the time. Lunch box lockers still have most of the same drawbacks as a spool, but they’re minimized by the fact the differential unlocks when you let off the gas.

Does it have to be locked? How about a limited slip? Much more user friendly. And, they were a factory option, so you can find L/S 28 spline 8.8s in junkyards and on Craigslist for not a ton of money.

Of course, the best option would be a selectable locker (like the ones from Auburn, ARB, and other big names) so you could decide when you want the diff to be locked and when you want it open. Of course, as I’m sure you know, these blow “don’t want to spend a lot” out of the water. Haha

That doesn’t really say what you want to do with the truck. Do you want to wheel it? Take it to the track? Do burn outs in empty parking lots?

3.0 with a bit of work done to it. Cold air intake, camshaft, mild tune.
