Default camshaft synchronizer help

I know much has been posted regarding this but I am struggling to know how to set the new synchro. I have read many different posts regarding the angle it must be set when at tdc. Some claim it can be on the compression stroke or not. Many different degrees either counter clockwise or clockwise from the centerline of the engine. Frustrated. I've tried a few of them but I keep tripping a cylinder misfire code. Been through an ignition coil, plugs, wires, crankshaft position sensor, cam sensor. I have a very annoying whine or chirp that continues after the engine has been killed for a second or two. I trip codes 316 and either 300 or 306. Most recently 302. The only plugs that are fouled when I remove them are 2 and 5. I want to eliminate my having the synchro aligned wrong. I'm surprised it runs similarly whether the synchro is counterclockwise or clockwise of the centerline.

I have 2003 xlt 3.0 non-flex 2wd with a manual transmission
