3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
Looking into eventually getting the Superchips Flashpaq Tuner 1865 for my 99 ranger 3.0 4x4 auto.
Anyone out there using this with their 3.0s please give me some reviews, advice, info, and etc..
Is it worth the money?
Do u notice a power gain, towing, mpg difference?

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
they are alright, i dont do any towing, but i dropped 1.5 seconds in my zero to sixty and get a few more mpg, they are great for diagnostics as well, real time engine specs and built in obd2 code reader, worth the money

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
Well one guy said, over on another ranger forum, that he keeps his on Heavy Tow mode.
When I try to select that it asks alot of questions, and says it needs to be running like 92 octane or something like that.
I have kept it on Gas saver mode for like 2 months, no power what so ever, and with my 33" tires, yeah didn't really get better gas mileage.
Put it on Performance mode, seemed to actually get better gas mileage on that.
Just wondering about these issues.
Also theres Quick Tune and Advanced Tune. What settings would be optimal in the advance sections?
I'm just too scared to go in and mess with all those advance features like shift points and etcs..
The owners instructional manual is pretty useless lol
----------
Hey man I also see u are running 33x12.50 tires too, so that's helpful.
Also, with ur big tires and no mudflaps or fender flares, isn't the side of ur truck getting paint chipped all up?
I have flares and my paint is already getting small chips. I need to get flare extenders or new bushwhacker fender flares.

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
Well when i first got mine, i went out at like midnight on a two lane road in the middle of nowhere and tested it out with my buddy. We played with the shift points to try and figure out where it needed to be tweeked at. At first we just kind of guessed at it and every time we adjusted a shift point i would run a 0 to 60 to see where i was at. Didnt hurt my truck, just wouldnt recommend doing this alot especially running large tires. Did shift pretty hard at two shift points though, so those were the ones we tried adjusting. Havent played with it in quite a while.
And as for gas saver mode, i didnt see any noticeable difference what so ever. Had it on performance for a while and then just set it back to stock.
And heavy towing, you CAN'T set it there. Idk why the feature is even on the flashpaq because it says you have to run that higher octane gas to even use the feature.
--------------
My paint, well it actually isnt to bad. I have very few like extremely small/minor chips. My roof on the other hand, thats a joke lol. No clear left and the paint is starting to eat away. And if you dont want any chips, id recommend getting the largest flares you can to compensate for that larger tire.

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
gcextreme, overall how do you like your Flashpaq? I just got my tax money back and am thinking of picking one up. I downloaded the manual and you are right, it does not seem like it would be a lot of help.

Well first I think it depends on your tires, are they stock or larger?
So far I have only used the Gas Saver and Performance.
Gas saver well it seemed to loose power, obviously my big tires didn't help, so I didn't get better mileage.
With Performance, that seemed to help with mileage, give me more power to turn the wheels. With my stick tires (no flashpaq) I was doing good to get 16 mpgs, now with bigger tires (and flashpaq) I am getting like 14.5 mpgs, which isn't bad, and without it, I was getting like 11-12mpgs.
So I think that helps.
I want to try the Tow mode, but it says it must burn Premium Gas, I think 93 or something higher, which doesn't make sense. That's a question I am waiting to have answered.
One guy on another forum said he kept hisnin Tow mode and has way more power, great for passing on the interstate. But i can't get a hold of him to ask him more about the Tow and the gas thing.
Plus the flashpaq can read engine codes CEL, and has other features, like it can display/monitor/track stuff like MAF air intake, TPS thoetrle position sensor data, oxygen sensor data, engine temp, rpm/speed, and much more.
If u have a 2000+ ranger u can also use it to recalibrate the Speedo thru the computer. My 99 won't do that, the Speedo isn't controlled thru the computer, I have to change a year out in the cable/transmission thing.
Overall I like it, but I didn't pay full price $360?? I got mine for $200 off of Craigslist. But u have to make sure u get the correct model for the ranger, model 1865 works for 99-10 rangers 3.0 and 4.0.
Dealing with the Superchips update software on my computer was a pain tho.
Overall so far I guess I like it, I just need to learn to use the Advance tune features, there alot of stuff you can change manually, lime shift points, etc. I have just been using the Quick Tunes.

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
I am running 235/75/15's, same as what came from the factory. On average I tend to get about 20mpg but really am not interested in the economy side of the unit. So it seems there is a bit of a learning curve with the Flashpaq. More or less I am just curious if this would actually make a difference. I will probably get one anyway just for the heck of it.

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
Like i said, there's two options, the Quick Tune and the Advanced Tune. With the Advanced, yeah there's a learning curve, lots to learn and do.
I have read in alot of threads and in other ranger forums, that most are really impressed and like it. I've only read two complaints. One was about Super Chips having bad customer service. The other was a guy saying that his friend had one and it screwed everything up and ruined his engine. Probably operator stupidity.
If u buy one, use it for at least 2 months, if u don't like jt, uninstall it and sell it on here, lol.
----------
Oh and when u install a tune, it saves your Stock settings in the device, when it does this, it becomes VIN locked to your truck. When u select STOCK tune, it will reinstall your stock settings and unlock the tuner.
It also says, make sure you put it back to stock before u take it in to be serviced. The shop may hook up their tool and it may conflict otherwise.

Yeah I read about that. I just don't trust people (not you guys, you guys are ok in my book) as far as buying a used one, especially online. I believe new is the way to go. Amazon has them for about $284 with free shipping right now.

Well I will sadly end your debate dude, lol. You are SOL (hope u know what that means).
It won't work for 1998. There's a thread started by another 98 owner that was looking into it. He contacted Superchips about it.
They said that 98 does have 0BDII system but it has a software glitch that whenever a tune is installed, everything seta back to 0 when the truck is turned off and re-started. Meaning the system goes back to the default settings.

Re: 3.0s with Superchips Flashpaq Users
I wonder if you found a 99 ranger with the EXACT same set up as your truck and swapped the computer into your truck Chad. I have no idea if it will work but it might be worth researching.
