Default Water pump swapped, New leak now.

Yo'

Last week I changed my water pump. My truck
has 95K on him and was dripping coolant. The weep hole
was full. It was a real PIA but I got 'er done Thursday.

All seemed well, system was building pressure,
no leaks, I drove him around town Thursday night, didn't
smell antifreeze any more... All good right? Wrong!

After I got to work Friday he was leaking from around
the Alternator bracket area and isnt building pressure
anymore. Work is about 30 Mi. from here.

When I was removing the Alt. Bracket, I recall
that one of the bolts was all "Gooped" up with something
that I scrapped away and wire brushed off before
re assembly.

Could that "Goop" have been thread sealant?
I watched several You Tube vids. on this process and
none ever mentioned that step.

Please advise. TIA

/Danno

The 3.0 has a timing chain cover leak issue.

Just to add further details, this morning i went out and re- torqued all the
bolts on the water pump I could get to. I was pleasantly surprised that you
can get to quite a few of them just to wrench em, can't get em out, but I didn't
want/need to do that anyway. I did pull the shroud, fan and belt.

Then I took a little drive around and listened to the "Country Countdown"
for a while.. All looks good again. System is up to full pressure, no leaking,
block is dry!

Hopefully this will be my second last post on this subject, I'll follow up with the
"After Work Report" Monday night.

Have great day everyone!

Yo' Y'all,

Well after my last post on this subject yesterday
RE: re-tourqing the water pump bolts, All has been well.
I drove around all day Sunday .

Happy to report all is well. My $75 AA water pump
is working as advertised, no leaks, no issues. I gotta say
this was the most "Invasive" job I ever had to do on my
Ranger. I did rebuild the front end a year or so ago:

2001 XLT 2WD.. 85K Miles.. Ball Joint Time

Good luck

Prestone is pissing me off...

Just got done doing my water pump twice, First round
it leaked like a bitch. Second time with a new felpro gasket all was
well for over 300 miles. I figured if didnt leak for a week I would
dump in some prestone.

Well we did the 300 miles and 1 week, all was well, I was
at AA this morning and grabed a jug of prestone coolant flush.
Dumped it in the coolant recovery tank and now my truck is
pissing on the driveway... Figured I would do the flush since
I was just running water anyway.

I used that blue prestone gasket sealer on the pump,
I have a 2 gal of prestone coolant i was ready to add untill
did the prestone coolant flush. WTF

It wasnt 4 hours after I added the flush that he began
leaking. My morning comute is 30 Miles. same coming home.

I'm kind of "Old Skool" anyway and did grab a jug of
Indian Head gasket sealer that I NEVER questioned. Silicon
is for Boobs, nothing else...

Yo'

Well after my month long Water Pump Struggle I'm
confident I got him licked. Thought I would pass along
what I figured out since this is a real PIA job.
and it looks like a couple other FRF members are
getting ready to do the "Deed"...

1: Go to AA or wherever and get a Felpro Gasket.

Dont use that piece of "construction paper job" that
comes with the pump.

2: While your there get a jug of Thread Sealer.

Use The thread Sealer on every water Pump bolt.
If you read back to my first post on this subject you will
see the question I ask'ed. at the get go..

Quote:

"When I was removing the Alt. Bracket, I recall
that one of the bolts was all "Gooped" up with something
that I scraped away and wire brushed off before
re assembly.

Could that "Goop" have been thread sealant?

End quote:

Well guess what.. It was and thread sealer and
is required on the two "Inboard" ALT. Bracket bolts.

I never got a response to my query, but am here
to "Testify" that at least the two most "Inboard" ALT bracket
bolt requires a big ol' glob of thread sealant. I hit all 3.

I was confident about my second WP "Re-do" and
when it was still leaking it blew me away. Leakage from the
ALT Bracket drips down the front of the Block. Easily
confused with WP leakage.

Hope this helps some one. Gonna finally add the prestone
coolant I got last spring! BTW, I didnt have any thread sealant
when I replaced my WP gasket and I dont think that was
the issue, BUT, as long as your in "That Deep" just use
good sh*t...

Good luck

Heres another tip. It's best when you change your water pump, change the gasket between the block & timing cover. It's a 100% guarantee on these 3.0 it will leak. another tip, change the timing chain set, it's only about 35.00 more dollars. Felpro has a timing cover gasket kit for this job including a water pump gasket and crank pulley sleeve & front crank pulley timing cover seal for about 17.00. Its bad enough he just did his water pump, but he will be taking it off again in the near future, and thats the real pain.

Yo Y'all,

Just a final, final post on this WP issue.
It's been almost 4 months and 5000 miles and
my Ranger has not lost 1 drop of coolant. I'm
very happy!!

My truck is just getting ready to turn 100K.
He has run great all summer after my WP fiasco.
Only new issue is a "Fueling Problem" which I am
getting ready to address once work get us off 6
10 hr. days. (7 if u want em) I sleep in church.

Fueling Problem

Anyway, the thread sealer on the ALT. Bracket
did the trick. They keep working us like dogs I may
just trade in the worlds best maintained Ranger and
grab a new F150. I had Monroe change my oil 800
miles ago (due to lack of time off) and still need to
try to see the "Sheen" on the dipstick. Motor is
as clean as church...

One has to decide how far to go with a basic
repair. WP's fail, fact of life, sure, I could have
replaced everything back to the rear U joint, but
where do you stop?

Take away from this thread: Since you
need to pull the ALT Bracket to swap your water
pump you NEED to goop those 2 long inboard
bolts up with Thread sealer.

God Bless Y'all

+1 to that. I just cahnged my water pump and timing chain. After 275,000 miles the factory originals didn't owe me anything. It was a major PIA, but now that I've done I thinkn the next one will be cake.
