Default Idles but wont move?

Recently had to put PATS system in. After the new pats system went in, the truck will idle, but if you try to take off it dies? Idles a little rough, but all the plugs are firing. Checked the fuel pressure, its where it should be. Air flow is good coming through the intake. I have heard the cam positioning sensor could maybe cause this, but everything else I have read shows that one would typically still drive if it needed one. But the truck idles all day, put it in gear and let the clutch out, its done. Any ideas?

Parking brake stuck on?

maybe try jacking the rear end up to get the wheels in the air (jack stands) and try again

Yea the parking brake most certainly isn't on. It sounds like the Camshaft Positioning Sensor is bad? But not for sure, it idles, but misfires occasionally. Could be something in the transmission too though eh? I mean the truck will rev to 3000 rpms before I get scared, and only seems to have problems when applying the clutch.

There must be more to this story than you are telling us. If you want help I suggest starting at the point before the Pats system was replaced.

Do or did you have a check engine light on? if so what are the codes stored in the computer?

Second why was the Pats System replaced? what parts exactly were replaced in the pats system?

Was the vehicle running correctly before the work was performed?

Have you checked the battery and charging system?

What is the mileage and overall condition of your truck?

What about the basics? You say you checked fuel pressure, what was the PSI at Idle and when you attempt to drive ?

Does the truck start easily or does it take a lot of engine cranking with the starter to get it to fire up?

Have you pulled a compression test on the engine?

Are all the fluids topped off?

Have you attached a vacuum gauge to the engine to check for a clogged exhaust system?

How old is the fuel in the tank? does it smell like varnish?

BTW I noticed that you state the truck is stock except for the radio. did you do the install or was it done before you purchased it?

How was the new radio installed or connected to the OEM harness? was it cut or is there a harness adapter installed.

I am not sure about your Ranger but some vehicles have speed controlled radio volume. I have seen in the past with a Mitsubishi I was working on
That would do the same thing yet had a code for a vehicle speed sensor. the sensor worked fine however the owners child was feeding the cd player pennies which caused
a short to the Vehicle speed sensor circuit.

I have my doubts that you have a radio install problem but I thought it was worth mentioning.

the more detailed information you provide the more likely someone here may be able to help.

I read that you have a miss. If you have a 3.0 and over 100,000 miles on it, It may be a cam sync. It drives the oil pump & sends voltage to the coil packs & it is run by the cam. It's a very common failer on the 3.0 and when they break it will lock up the motor. Also I read you changed the PAT's, Do you have remote start on it? If you do I think that may be a problem because the two systems are not working together. But after rereading your post that may not be an issue because I notice you have a 5 speed & not an auto tranny. And I don't think you can put a remote start on a stick.

The truck has 217.000 miles. Was in generally good condition. The radio was installed by the previous owner. Which was done with an adapter and not cut. The truck ran fine, one day it just wouldn't crank and the theft light was on. Took it to the dealership and they installed a new transponder, programmed a new key, and ? It started but wouldn't drive when they were done. It acts like it either jumped time or is misfiring when trying to take off then dies? The fuel rail read right at 65. Which is what autozone said it should be, but that was only at idle. The dealership claimed there weren't any codes thrown? I don't know how the fuck that could be? Sometimes it cranks for awhile before starting and sometimes like it should. So far I am at a loss and am considering selling it.

it sounds like you are loosing spark, Which could be from what Nopower mentioned.

However the Camshaft sync from what have read normally makes a chirping or other sound from the magnet falling out of position.

I would also think the computer would have a code for the sensor if it was that bad to cause the engine to die when trying to accelerate.

I think the best thing to do is to replicate the problem while the truck is on jack stands.

use a inline spark tester while someone is watching the spark tester to see if you lose spark.

You can also install a noid light at one of the injector connectors to see if you lose the signal to the injectors when accelerating.

once you know for sure what is dropping out you can start a pin point test from a Manual to determine the cause of your problem.

these kits can be picked up as part of a tool loner program from pepboys autozone napa
etc

Alldata is a pretty good source for factory diagnostic information yet it is not free.
