Default Catalytic Converter count

Awhile ago I was calling around to muffler shops to see what it'll cost to get and install new cats. Everyone kept saying the truck had two and was confused when I said there is three. I got thinking the other day that since the truck was bought new in California years ago that there is a "special" set up for CA smog rules.

If that is the case for having extra due to CA, would there be any affect on bringing it to two cats like everyone I talk to claims there is? In Idaho we just started emission testing but not very strict and I would imagine that all the Rangers that were bought here have two and running/passing fine.

If your in Cali yes elsewhere no. My flex fuel 3.0 had like 4 or 5. As long as they clean the air enough to make your downstream 02s happy your golden. You can also have a custom tune to make them less sensitive. They do it all the time on catless cars.

I have no plans on being in California long enough to get checked anyways. So if I gut it, I should be fine? It's right after the last o2, before the muffler.

I wouldn't imagine that I would get much gains though

Only if they are clogged. If it's after the 02 it won't know the difference.
