Exclamation Cant shift into 5th

I have a 2002 Edge 3.0 v6 automatic, im having trouble with shifting into 5th gear, my overdrive indication light does not turn on or off(its currently off), the gear shift control arm sometimes is not where it needs to be, my truck will let me know if it isnt. I can only go about 92 mph before the engine starts to buck. I have had the truck for about 3 years now and have mever been able to get it into 5th gear. I am now wanting to get the problem fixed but i dont know where to start. Any suggestions?

What rpms are you at when you hit 92? There is a factory speed limiter that comes in about 90-95. My 03 spun so high at that speed if you aren't in OD id doubt it would hold together very long. The light burns out in the OD light all the time. And the selector gets out of alignment. If your moving forward it's in drive you will feel it drop in to the slot when shifting.

Its about 4.4k that it bucks, so there is a governor, makes since if the truck cant handle anything over that. I guess im glad that i dont have a problem to fix. I still have to fix a couple things with the dash that my brother fucked with on purpose when he borrowed it. I cant stand to see the oil gauge pointing towards the speedometer.

Yeah that's about right. It will vary depending on rear end gear and tire size. But it sounds like your in overdrive. I had stock 15s on mine and 3.73 gears in 4th at that speed I was at like 5 grand so that's probably about right for overdrive. But the bucking is definitely from the governor. I turned mine off when I swapped to manual trans though. Yeah I hate those oil pressure gauges. Id get an aftermarket one or do the MOD to make it read actual pressure while your in there.

Shouldn't be driving 90+ on most roads anyway. Probably a good thing in our mini trucks that they try to prevent it.

Be safe.

If you can't use the over drive lockout button, the wire attached to the button on the shifter is likely broken. It's common. Can be easily fixed by removing the top plastic cover on the steering column and recrimping or resoldering the wire back together. Then your lockout button should work.

Also, your shifter needle position can be adjusted. Sometimes the cable that actuates it gets out of adjustment. Remove the plastic kick panel below the steering wheel, and the metal panel beneath that. Reach up to the column and there's a black wheel on the cable housing that can be rotated to move the gear indicator needle where it's supposed to be.

And for God-sakes slow the f@ck down. 85 MPH in Texas is crazy anyway in my book; I can't imagine anyone needing to go ANY faster than that.

Hell the speed limit is 85 on the toll road around Austin. 80 in a lot of the state on the interstate.

I wish that was the speed limit here. Everyone does it anyway. Especially once you get out of the city and it goes to 4 lanes people run 100 all the time.

That's when you realize you're in a small truck and get in the right lane. Been to Atlanta. Have no problems doing the speed limit.

The LIMIT is 80-85. So doing 93 is exceeding the speed limit by quite a bit, which is already the highest in the United States.

Everyone stupid enough to do it you mean. It just goes to show that no matter what you make the speed limit, people always have to drive faster. Make it 80, people will do 100. Make it 100, people will do 120. It never ends.

I just let the left lane be for all the stupidz to do what stupidz do, and bouncing a truck off its rev limiter to get somewhere 2 minutes faster than everyone else isn't a worthwhile risk activity for the truck's health or the driver.

I never advocate speeding. Its only purpose is to show that an individual has wonton disregard for the law AND for everyone else's safety on the road. Accidents seldom involve only one vehicle.....
