Default Programmer/Custom tune??

I just recently bought a 2003 regular short bed ranger with a Auto trans with 48k and looking to see what options there are for programmers there are. I'm not looking really for power, more so for mpg increase. In the past 2 weeks of owning it's been averaging 20-21mpg. 80% of my driving is highway and Ive been running 65-70 mph. So I don't think it's doing to bad, but would like to get better if possible.

Copy & Paste Time:

The SCT X3/X4 setup is generally regarded as the best available tuner for the Ranger.

The SCT is a true custom tuner...it doesn't use a 'canned' or 'generic' Ford Ranger type tune like the Superchips Flashpaq setup does.

It will cost a little more than the Superchips Flashpaq (See below for rough pricing on the SCT), but you get so much more flexibility. You're the only person that can decide if it's worth the extra money in your specific case. For me - it was a no brainer - SCT all the way.

A slightly cheaper option would be the FlashPaq setup from Superchips. The Superchips tuner comes with canned tunes that covers a Ranger. You'll at least save a couple of bucks doing it this way. They look to run (+/-) $300 new & should be much cheaper used.

The Superchips is more of a "one size fits all" deal - while the SCT is a true custom tuner.

As far as getting a custom tune written for the SCT - I would recommend this guy:

Don @ LaSota Racing (http://www.lasotaracing.com/MOX3.html)

I've used Don numerous times on both the Ranger (4.88's & 35's) & now my Mach 1 for some new tunes and he has awesome customer service! I'm talking same day, everyday responses.

Don also wrote my base supercharger tune on the Ranger to 'dial-in' my truck well enough to drive to the dyno place for the full blown tuning session.

They will ask you exactly what modifications you have done to your vehicle, and send you a tune (or multiple tunes) based on your desires. Don also offers 90 free days of emailed tunes from the date of purchase. Basically you can submit working LiveLink datalogs - and he dials in your tune in even further based on the real world data from your specific truck.

LaSota Racing (Last I checked):
SCT X4 w/ One Tune: $399.00
SCT X4 w/ Modified NA Tune: $450.00
SCT X3 w/ Power Adder/Engine Swap Tune: $499.00

Afterwards if you just want and/or need a new tune written for something it runs like $50.00-$100 per tune (Click for email tune info: LaSota SCT Email Tune Info)
