Default 5 speed transmission acting up

So for some odd reason when my truck is in neutral, and then I push the clutch in and try to go into first it is locked and won't go into first. so I then have to go into another gear or over toward 5th and Reverse and come back so I can shift into first. can someone help me determine what this is?

Sounds to me like your 1st gear syncro is out, or the shift fork is messed up. My first guess would be the syncro, my truck is very high mileage and hard to shift into 1st after sitting in neutral.

In every manual truck I've driven, it's a struggle to go straight into first and I've made it a habit to always shift into second and then first before moving... if you try doing that, is it easier to shift into 1st or is the problem still there?

Your transmission takes automatic transmission fluid even though it is a manual.

You would think they would call it transmission fluid then?
