Default Intake issues

Please help! I just put a short ram on my 2005 ranger 3.0 my check engine light came on and its sluggish off takeoff. I think is has to do with the sensor closes to the air filter anyone have an idea what that sensors for or what the cause of it is?

Look for any air leaks between the MAF sensor and the throttle body.

If the new filter is oiled gauze (like a K&N), the oil could have contaminated the MAF sensor.

If a quick inspection doesn't help, pull the trouble code that is causing the CEL.

when you say short ram, you want to try and keep it the same distance as the factory

That's called a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF), and as said above, it could have become contaminated if you oiled the filter too much. You can easily take this sensor off and clean it and see if that helps. Use electric component cleaner, you can find it for around $6 for a can at Advanced Auto.

First make sure you plugged it back in correctly after you did your install, check for leaks between the filter and intake and make sure everything fits snugly, then check for cracks/leaks along the tubing.

I recently had to have a piece of valve tubing replaced that had gotten cracked and my check engine light came on as well as throwing out some lean codes. The tubing was really hidden and got missed for a while as I was trying to figure this out. One mechanic tried to tell me that the K&N was pulling in too much air and that there was nothing I could do to get it to turn off as long as the intake/filter was on, since the airflow is above stock settings. Bullcrap. Check your connections, sensor and tubing. If anything, go to AutoZone or Advanced Auto and they'll run diagnostics for you free of charge.
