The Chirp...
Hi guys, I'm new here and this is my first post. I know there are many threads out there about this dreaded chirp. But so far from all the many I have looked at none of them seem to be described like what's happening to me. I really wish more people had videos with audio of what their problem was with the chirping... I will try to get one tomorrow and post it. But for now I need suggestions. Here is what's happening.
Truck is a 2002 XLT with the 3.0 Vulcan, 2wd auto trans, about 165,000 miles.
Anytime I run the truck there is a slightly faint chirp that seems to be in rhythm with the running of the engine (as in I can hear it at idle almost perfectly regularly as the engine goes through its cycle). It makes the noise faintly at idle, but really kicks in and is noticeable when I am cruising down the highway at 55 mph/ 2200 rpm. And, (don't ask me why I know, it's a long story...) when the serpentine belt is off and the engine is running it does not make the noise. I have already tried replacing the tensioner pulley (not the whole assembly yet) and idler pulley but both of those made the noise worse so I took them off and back to Autozone and replaced them with the old ones. From what I have read it doesn't seem to be the cam sync, but I could be wrong. I guess my next option would be the tensioner assembly? Any info is greatly appreciated!! Like I said, I will try to get a video with audio and post it tomorrow.

Do not run the truck until you replace and check the cam sync.

If it doesn't chirp with the belt off, then it's not the cam sync. The cam sync would do it when the belts off. Take the belt of again and try spin everything by hand. If the is sound or play in anything that's the cause of the sound. Are you having oil pressure issues?

you don't know for sure if you only did it once. I know mine chirped. But it was on and off. Then o ignored it. Then you have to do an engine swap.

Re: The Chirp...
could also be related to a stretched fan belt. old fan clutch. slow coolant leak onto fan belt.

Re: The Chirp...
Thank you everyone for the responses, advice, and welcomes! I do appreciate it! I have not had a chance to look at it yet but I should be able to this weekend. I don't think it's the cam sync because 1) it does not make the noise with the belt off. I have tried this twice... (both times were accidental when the belt came off after hitting a large puddle too fast haha); 2) I am not having any other typical cam sync symptoms such as a lack of power or stall/misfire sort of symptoms. I will try taking the belt off this weekend again and checking all the pulleys by hand. Bjurke, you might be on to something there. I have had the truck for almost 2 years ~25k miles and to my knowledge the fan and its components have never been replaced. I have also noticed that I have been topping off my coolant resevouir maybe once a month... I will keep everyone posted, and thanks again for all the help!!
EDIT**
No, Damned225, I am not having oil pressure issues. I do have a pretty decent oil leak (about 1 quart between 3k mile oil changes), but that's another forum for another day.

I would check cam sync anyways with 165k miles

Good, I can't exactly remember what the reading would be for cam sync, I really should check on that myself. Your doing the right thing by doing some diagnosis work to find the problem. So happy hunting, and have fun

Re: The Chirp...
Okay guys, so after taking the belt off last night and checking over all the pulleys I am at odds once again. The only thing worth noting was that the power steering pump pulley had a slight bit of inward/outward play (as in i could "pull it off the shaft" a small amount and push it back on a small amount. According to my Haynes manual, that is normal. So, what else could it be? Thanks again!
@Ranger Danger 98 - That's a good idea. I will check it sometime soon just to be sure.
Also, would there be anything else you guys would recommend checking in general as preventative maintenance? Not just on the engine but anywhere else on the truck.
