Default replacing a 3.0

My son has a 99 xlt with a 3.0 flex fuel engine in it. He blew the motor a rod went threw the oil pan. My question is what do I need to look for in a replacement engine? Can I use any 3.0 out of a ranger? Do I need to worry about production dates? Any help and or advice would be helpful. Thanks

Same year or newer flex fuel engine so everything will be the same.

the only things different on a flex fuel are the injectors and spark plugs. They did coat the inside of the motor to help protect against any water they may be in the E85 fuel due to the risk of it being way higher. Not many people actually run E85 fuel. So in all reality.. all that needs to be changed out to keep the factory appearance is the injectors and the right set of plugs. If youre using the old ones off your motor than any 3.0 will work.

Thanks for the info. I just want to be clear. I found a 3.0 out of a 2003 Ranger that will take care of my needs as long as I use the injectors and the plugs out of the 93 ranger. Is that correct? I just don't want to buy the wrong thing.

If you are just using the block, you're good. If you are swapping the entire motor, that will have issues since the 93 has a distributor and is OBD I and the 2003 has a coil pack and is OBD II.

Yes. You should be good swapping a 03 motor into a 99. If you want to keep the flex fuel capability then swap out your injectors and make sure the spark plugs are for your 99 w/ flex fuel.
