Default 3.0 turbo

Later on the next ranger I get, I want to turbo charge it. Would it be worth turbo charging? An I'm pretty mechanically inclined and want to do this to a fresh rebuild.

Because it would be a ton of time, money, and effort for a motor that wouldn't put out that much power.
Plus, You wouldn't be able to run a whole lot of boost through it on stock internals anyway. (Which would be more work and more money to upgrade).

When it comes down to it, there are cheaper and easier ways to make more power.

What would be a good alternative that wouldn't eat up too much gas?

Buy a 2.5 add forged pistons then turbocharge it.

If "fuel economy" comes into your equation at all - a power adder isn't for you.

Save for maintenance items instead. Just drive it.

Probably about $1500-2,000 on the engine

Easiest way to get more power and aftermarket support? Explorer 5.0. More toque and hp than your 3.0, relatively straight forward swap, and the 5.0 has a huge aftermarket support base
