Default Misfire codes, coil pack changed already (p0302,p0316,p0300)

2004, 3.0 2wd Auto, 190k miles

Hi guys been awhile since I have been here but you guys have helped! Right after I finish my Christmas shopping I get a truck issue. of course!

Ok so background story, about 3 weeks ago I had a rough idling intermittently, every few days it would last about 10 minutes or so. Then finally 2 days ago, I had terrible IDLE, misfiring and a bad smell. (P0302,p0316 and misfire on 1000 revs code) That night based on advice from 10 people on FORD RANGER FANATICS, I replaced my coil pack with a BWD coil pack. My original coil pack has at LEAST 130k but could very well have 190k if it was not replaced in the first 60k. Anyways, right off the bat it was MUCH better! Better idle, much better smell but all day it wasn't perfect and now similar symptoms are back just not as rough.

So it wasn't the coil pack but it did help. Yesterday I have bank 2 sensor stuck rich and system too lean codes, these were pending codes. Now this morning we finally have set codes p0302 and p0316 and p0300. So essentially back to square one.

heads were somewhat recently done (for the second time), spark plugs and wires done in the last 50 k. I have carb cleaner to find a vacuum leak it will be my first attempt.

What could be wrong? Especially for coil pack to improve it but not fix it.

ALSO CAN I DRIVE THIS TRUCK WHILE I CHASE THIS ISSUE DOWN? I understand I am wasting gas but its my only vehicle and I need it for work

Replace the coil pack, plugs and wires with OEM Motorcraft. These 3.0 motors are very picky when it comes to that stuff and Motorcraft is the only one that doesn't have any issues. Any aftermarket brand and the truck throws a bitch fit.

Dang, they even said I cant take it back If I use the pack. What a waste. someone else used a bwd with no issues which is why I bought it

----------

Ran perfect for a long time tho with the stuff I have now so I don't really buy the whole brand loyalty thing...

Take it back and say that it doesn't work. They have to take it back in that case. What works > brand loyalty is the way you gotta go these days. Things aren't made the way they used to be.

Okay so change coil pack, you really think spark plugs and wires are next? even with misfires on opposite sides?

I believe so for the coil pack...test first but poor mpgs and the smell would indicate coil pack
Number 1: Switching Signal Circuit for Cylinders 3 and 4.
Number 2: Switching Signal Circuit for Cylinders 2 and 6.
Number 3: Switching Signal Circuit for Cylinders 1 and 5.
Number 4: Power Circuit (12 V) for all of the Ign. Coils within the coil pack.

Misfire continues even when switching cylinders but I will try to do it more.

What kind of plugs did you put in last? Even with 50k on the plugs now it wouldn't hurt to change them. Id start there.

How did the coil pack test out?
I had a new non-oem pack go out after a 600mile trip in my car. No codes either. Apparently the ambient temp (hot) would randomly cause the misfire.

What, how or why did you replace the heads...twice...could be related.

Idk why or how, I just know its been done twice, once at 60k and then again at 120k

----------

switching wires to different areas only made it worse or no difference on the coil pack. does this mean my coil pack is bad already? not even 30 miles on it.

Wires don't switch around, bcuz firing order.
You can test your coil pack with some help.
The replaced heads would be reason enuf for me to look for a cause and effect there more than double checking plugs again.
Hope it is the plugs and connections. GL.
