Angry Oil Pan Gasket Replacement 3.0 4WD Auto

In the process of replacing the timing cover gasket and associated parts (Chain & Gears, Water Pump, Idlers, etc.) I screwed up and dropped a piece of old gasket material into the oil pan.

Fast forward, I've dropped the front differential and axles as far as I can and still can't get the damn oil pan past the pick up. I figure I need to replace the pan gasket now but don't know if I can fish the new gasket in without removing the pan. I've read some posts that suggest loosening the transmission bolts and sliding it back 1/2" to get the pan to clear the dust shield. Does this work?

Should I just say screw it and clean the old gasket pieces out of the pan and bolt that shit back together? I can see the pieces the fell in and easily remove them.

If it wasn't leaking too bad before around the pan gasket, you can try that. Look around it and make sure no parts of it ripped when you removed the pan. I would also run a thin bead of RTV around the pan to make sure it seals back up.

The other alternative is to attempt to snake a new gasket around the oil pickup and back up onto the pan.

To entirely get the pan out, usually the tranny has to be unbolted and slid back, then the engine has to be lifted a couple inches for it to slide out to the side and up.

Thanks rangerlocal. I'm going to give it a try and see if I can snake the new gasket around the oil pick up. If not, I'll take a look a what is involved in unbolting the tranny to get enough clearance to remove the pan. I really don't want to leave the old gasket in place because it was suspect to leaking to begin with. I don't know if is was leaking or if it was just the timing cover gasket and the rear main seal. I plan on having someone else do the rear main since i don't have the ability to completely pull the tranny. Thanks Again!
