Default Rev limiter?

I have an 03 3.0 Ranger, when I'm in park or neutral and I give it gas it will go up to 3k rpm then stumble, won't go past it. I also get a nice smell of burning oil or something when I do this. Is there a rev limiter that is stopping my truck from going higher in the RPM range, or do I have a problem here?

Yes, it is normal. That's the computer shutting off fuel injectors, the same way it limits your speed to ~ 92mph.

I believe you can remove it with a super chips flashpaq programmer.

Actually you can increase it up to like 140 or something. You will die before your truck goes that fast......by that I mean it will try to kill you and probably succeed. I have mine set at 120 because, well, that is what my tires are rated for. Do I drive that fast? Nope, but if I am ever chased by James Bond type had guys I want to know I can.

Yep. With a programmer (aka Tuner), you can change the speed limiter up or down, as well as the RPM limiter (idle and in gear). You can't remove them, they have to have some value. But you could set it for a speed that your truck will never achieve and it is basically "removed". For example, if you set your speed limiter for 160mph, trust me, you will never hit it. The drive train will jettison and your wheels will fall off first.

With that said, please don't be retarded. There is a reason the limiters is set for 95ish. The tires, brakes, and drive train are just not designed for high speed operation. Keep it on the track and build your truck to handle it.

Actually I did search, that's how I found this thread. And the reason I was revving it in park is because I was trouble shooting a problem of a misfire I was getting around 3-3.5k rpms on the freeway. A new camshaft syncronizer fixed the misfire at speed but it was still misfiring at around the same rpm in park. That's why I was revving it and as you can imagine I thought both symptoms were related.

A rev limiter at 3k in park makes absolutely no sense to me.

And you guys are right the 3.0L is a dog.
