Default what years or car have my engine

How do I find out what engines I can put in my ranger? I hit a deer and it has caused all kinds of problems. I was told I may need a new head, or head gasket, or engine ... I was told there were other cars and years that would go in my truck. I have a 1999 4 door 6 cy i think it is 3.0l v6 efi but not sure.

hahaha well first of all ya gotta know what motor you do have. but if ya call a dealer up and ask them i bet they'd tell ya, or even ask a scrap yard. I'd start with a scrap yard first, they seem to be more help usually.

I did call the dealership ... in fact I called three the first two were not helpful at all ... I was told each year had different part numbers and they couldn't tell me. The last one told me he thought the engine was used from 1998 to 2001 and it looked like what i listed in my post was the engine. The last guy said he didn't think any cars could use truck engines. That didn't sound right. The first two were actually rude that is why I found the forum. I thought people who loved the truck would help me save mine. She has been a great little truck up to now.

the 3.0 has been around for awhile, was just discontinued in the Ranger this past year.

Wikipedia, then checked with Edmunds. Although wiki says "late 1990" and Edmunds simply says 1991, here's the edmunds link:
