Default Can not read codes

My check engine light came on and when I took it to an Auto Zone they could not read the codes. It seems the module does not work. I looked for the obvious loose wires but it looked OK. I disconnected the battery to reset the light but it came back on after a short while. I took it to another store to try again and again his code reader was getting no signal.. Where do I go from here? The truck runs OK but I want to check things out and take care of any potential problems.

like STL mentioned, its probably the PCM port/ cig lighter fuse, they are on the same circuit. if your cig lighter doesnt work also that would be a good clue.

The previous owner messed with the wiring behind the console. Doing things like wiring in fog lamps and the radio on 12vdc constant. Anyways, I had to fix a lot of it. I didn't originally have a fuse in 17 and the cig lighter has never worked. I'm worried he also disconnected the power to the dlc port too. What pins should have 12vdc on them at the port?
