Default Re: engine stays at high revs when shifting / not in gear

Ford garage has inspected my issue and has told me this is normal and the IAC is designed to keep the revs high for 2 - 3 seconds to aid gear change by matching transmission and engine speed. This has proved dangerous to me on two occasions. First when the backend flipped out on a very slippery surface and the higher than idle revs kept it out there for a couple of seconds. Second when in stop start traffic there is no engine braking for 2-3 seconds and when this coincided with a gear shift from 3 - 4 the vehicle actually increased speed and I had to rush to find the brake. The new 3.2l 5 cyl engine is a joy but at 1400 rpm in 6th I am doing 100kmh. So a few unexpected revs has a big impact on driving technique. I can understand the need for this in an automatic but not a manual. Does disconnecting the speed sensor have any other side effects apart from stopping the 2-3 second delay to idle? Incidentally this only happens when the rpm exceeds 1200 so a manual driver needs 2 driving styles for changing gear, a normal driving style of seesawing the clutch / accelerator below 1200 rpm and fully engaging the clutch prior to depressing the accelerator when exceeding 1200 rpm.

My 96 Ranger just started to stay at high RPM's. With or without clutch and driving and while parked in neutral.
I've changed the TPS on two occasions during the life of the truck and that fixed the problem.
Could that be your problem also? I need to replace mine again as it just started to do the high RPM's. Oh, I've got 199600 on the engine and it otherwise purrs like a kitten.
Could I be right on the TPS?

I just noticed this issue on my 2000 Ranger today. I just bought the truck 4 days ago and i've either had music playing or had the windows open (wind in my face/ears) so I haven't really been able to hear the engine until tonight, when I had the windows up and no music playing.

Was wondering if it is an issue at all or as some have said if it is normal. My previous vehicle didn't do this. When I let off the clutch the rpms stay up for 2-3 secs and then go down to idle. I also tested this while stopped: i revved the engine a few times but it didn't "stick" when I wasn't driving/shifting. Doesn't seem to cause me any problems but I just want to make sure it's not a big deal.

After much research I have come to the following understanding.

The Automatic Idle Valve is linked to the speed sensor on the rear axle.

When the vehicle is in motion the revs stay high to facilitate a pending gear change, matching the engine speed to the gearbox speed. This is why the engine revs do not stick when the vehicle is stationary.

This is fine in an automatic but a real bloody pain in a manual.

In the good ol days when people where allowed to think for themselves a smooth gear change would have been accomplished by double de-clutching or controlling your revs manually.

Not only is this annoying but in certain circumstances down right dangerous. Had me scrambling for the brakes more than once when relying on non existing engine braking in stop start traffic because the engine revs are high for 2 - 3 seconds when the accelerator is released.

My truck does the same thing.

hi there, new to forum i hope this is the right place to post a question...
i have a 2000 manual 3.0 v6 and every time i shift upward the rpms jump at least 5,000 (2-2.5 or 3) i replaced the iac and it seems worse now, now every time i stop the rpms wait to drop and sometimes wont drop instead they get higher. at that point i end up having to turn my truck off then back on and it stops... anyone else had anything similar?? its fucking weird

My 4 cylinder 2000 is reving extremely high while in neutral. I replaced the IAC unit and this fixed the problem for about a week.
I then replaced a hose going into the throttle body from near where the oil cap sits. This fixed the problem, but now that I turned on the A/C the problem is back!
I was going to suggest this as a fix but, the problem keeps coming back. Maybe something dealing with a sensor in the A/C unit?
The search continues.....

You need to post this in the 4 cylinder tech section and create a signature with with at least the year, engine size, and transmission type.
