I like your thinking, same issue many have on our bike motors if the front pipe is not sealed to the head it pops on shift and deceleration and will burn a valve if not taken care of.

I thought that MIGHT be possible except for the fact that the pics above were from the stock motor with stock manifolds and cats. No leaks.

No leaks now between the headers and heads now either.
I scoured that thing looking. when we pulled the headers to pull the heads this time all the mating surfaces on the gaskets showed positive sealing all the way around.

What is REALLY intriguing is when you look at the Picture #1 closely you can see that the valve seat IS MISSING! when we pulled the heads we were stumped and like... WTF??? we have seen them bad, seen them recessed, seen the cracked and even see the valve beat up so bad it is actually down inside the seat. Seen valves burnt, chipped, bent and even have a small line of burn out. But to have MULTIPLE cylinders where the exhaust Valve seat is TRULY MISSING... WTF??
Even more puzzling... NO EVIDENCE of the seat falling into pieces and scarring the piston, head, valves or cylinder bore? When a spark plug electrode or even foreign object gets into a cylinder it leaves dings, dents, scratches or other evidence of it bouncing around and causing havoc. NOTHING! You can even see evidence of just that in the cylinder where piston came apart!

BTW, here is the custom grind cam card with #s.

But, again, the pics above was from a STOCK motor before the headers and cam.
So the SAME issue is happening now after the rebuild that was happening before the rebuild.

So my 2002 3.0L ranger just vaporized 3 exhaust valve seats and took a huge divot from one of the valves last February on a trip out of town. Engine started cutting out and then rapidly overheated. By time I could stop it from 70 mph it was toast.

I had heads rebuilt and drove it 150 miles home before first engine code light came on: Crankshaft position sensor problem. Made it home O.K. w/o any noticeable engine problem, just code light. I replaced sensor but then new code: Camshaft position sensor problem. Took into Ford dealer. They replaced sensor and when another Camshaft position sensor code came on they replaced synchronizer--even though bushings looked great. Drove it 50 more miles and engine started cutting out ("bucking") on acceleration up hills. By time I got it back to dealer, engine was cutting out on any acceleration AND overheating.

On diagnostic, they found CPM was putting out 1.4 volts instead of .4 volts. They said that would cause sensors to act flakey, send wrong information back to CPM and cause various component problems. Now, I am waiting on CPM replacement and testing. Stay tuned.

This thread is 3 years old so chances are the OP gave up and went on to something else.

Replace the heads. The 3.0 heads were a problem for years. The castings from Ford were defective and valve seat regression is the result.
Find a good machine shop, they should be able to find you NEW heads, do a valve job, and true everything up.
The Ford dealers and most shops and crates are just rebuilding the bad heads and they will tell you no new heads are available.
I just bought 2 (around $250.00 each) and had them do the valves and machine everything at a Racing Engine shop.
I have a truck that runs like brand new.
