Default acts like its starving, but new filter didnt help

I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I can usually fix ours cars/trucks if I know what is wrong by watching YouTube or reading up on it, but my daughter's 1995 3.0 ranger has me a little confused.

It has never ran as strong as I thought a 3.0 would, but recently it seemed weaker than normal when I drove it, almost like it was starving for fuel or air. That night I left the lights on and had to jump it for my daughter in the morning. I told her I wanted to change the fuel filter and air filter, but she needed to get to work right then so I let her go. She didn't get more than a mile before it died.

When I tried to start it, it fired right up, but had a little hesitation when I stepped on the gas in park, but I could rev it up pretty good. When I put it in drive and step on the gas it acts like its getting no fuel and get maybe 50 feet and dies.

I changed the fuel filter and air filter because it was dirty, but no change. I happen to notice the pcv had wiggled out a bit and looked toasted so I changed that. I noticed one of the sparkplug wires had a huge chunk missing, so I got new plugs and wires...no change.

That's when I started looking around on here a little and tried to clean the MAF, but it looked brand new when I looked at it and cleaning it had no effect.

So I've pretty much just done normal maintenance stuff so far, trying to start with easy semi-cheap fixes but it hasn't helped the problem. I dont even have a volt meter and I can't get it to a parts store to check for any codes (not sure if engine light is on because dash lights dont work).

My guesses are TPS, injectors, fuel pump, or computer, but I'm hoping somebody has had a similar experience and found a solution, or has a clever way of helping me isolate the problem.

Thanks

Best bet is to do a fuel pressure test. That will help you determine better troubleshooting.

Sounds like the fuel pump isn't keeping up. Try hooking up a fuel pressure gauge. For that year, with the engine running, it should be between 28 and 45 psi.

I rented a test gauge and it says 0 while key is on and only 5 when barely running. I can hear the fuel pump click/buzzing on. It took a couple tries to get the truck started, and it didn't stay running, not surprising I guess if only 5 psi.

Next step?

I really appreciate the timely help guys, thanks again.

Time for a new fuel pump.

Thanks guys, new fuel pump is in and it runs great. I even burnt rubber taking it for a test spin, so the 3.0 does have a little guts when running on all six and getting fuel lol. Now I just have to warn my daughter that it has a little more get-up than she was used to.

One thing I noticed when the bed was off was the filler hose looked pretty warn where it is pipe clamped to the tank, but at nearly $200 for a new one I passed on swapping it. The inner hose looked nearly brand new inside the tank, for what it's worth. What should I look for if it were to fail, and what is the worse case scenario if it does?

If it fails, fuel will leak out of it. And when you fill up, most of the fuel will spill onto the ground.
