Default Engine Blown - Can I go from 3.0 to 4.0?

I have a 2004 3.0 with 178,00 miles on it that just seized up and died

The truck is in great condition, and besides changing a couple of alternators, it's been an excellent truck.

So I'm looking at having a used engine put in, from what I've read so far this is the most economical thing to do.....my questions are is that the most economical route?

and if so, I was just thinking would it be possible to go to a 4.0? or am I opening a whole can of worms and extra expense?

Thanks in advance for advice.....

no you can do it...youll need the PCM, transmission, wiring, and a trip to the ford store to get PATS reprogrammed...then youre golden

So doable......but I'm looking at driving my cost up substantially??

I'm gonna be on a tight budget, so I would only consider it if the cost difference wouldn't be to great........just thought if it's not a great difference in cost, it might be the thing to do.

Okay.....probably what I'll be doing then....any advice on buying a used motor? is that gonna be the cheapest route?

Mechanic that has looked at it now quoted me $2800 to replace it with a used motor that has 77,000 miles on it and a 90 day warranty?

Not being a mechanic, and only doing basic repairs and maintenance I don't know if that's a good deal or not? Should I keep looking or is that about what I should expect?

I would replace the cam sync and all gaskets with the engine still out

That's some pretty killer labor price. These engines can be had for around $800 from junkyards, pulled and plucked. That means he's charging $2000 to pull and drop it in. At standard $100 an hour rates, that's saying it's going to take him 20 hours. I think that's way excessive. Most places around here charge about a grand for a pull and swap.

He is charging $900 or so for the labor, the rest is the charge for the engine, but it's not from a local junk yard...it'd be shipped here, but it's one that's used....come with a 90 day warranty.

I have found another engine online for $1530 with only 48,000 miles on it, but 3 year parts warranty.....sounds like a pretty good deal from what I've been finding so far.......my concern with pulling one from the junkyard, is what am I getting? most will only offer a 30 day warranty.

Just got the Truck back today, had a Jasper Rebuild installed. 3year/100,000 miles parts/labor warranty on it.

It's running good, seems to have a little more power. It cost me more to go this route, but I heard so many good things about the Jasper rebuilds that it made sense, if I was gonna spend a large chunk of money, I wanted something that would last and come with a reliable warranty.

My next vehicle was gonna be a 4x4, but now after sinking money into this truck.......I won't be buying anything new for a long time, so to remedy the no 4x4 I'm gonna start saving for my True-Track for the rear end.....that should help a good bit in snowy/muddy conditions.
