You have that thing with six wires coming off it that spins and rarely fails.

Exactly. Simplicity is best. All these "new technologies" and other crap in these new cars is only going to cause more issues and expensive repairs.

Mines even simpler it doesn't have a cam sync or distributor.

Mine actually has a little funnel directly below the filter. You can unscrew the filter, then let it drain into the funnel before you pull it all the way out.

See, I tried that. But it gets all over everything anyway.

I would wrap a grocery bag around the filter once I got it loosened, then sort of wrap it around the filter as I finished detaching it. A little less messy coming out of the wheel well then.

I do it that way too. Once I've got the filter unthreaded I use a little 4" long hook tool with a handle on it and hook the filter in the thread hole and then snake it up through the manifold and steering shaft. I lower the new filter down the same way.

mine has the same thing, i have never had a problem spilling oil with that funnel.

i also pull the filter from the top, under the steering shaft and up. going back in i fill the filter 3/4 of the way and stick my finger in the center to manipulate the filter back in place without spilling oil out of the filter

I worked on my cousins 3.0, I found that it's easier to grab it from the top of the engine.
