Default Gas Mileage = Shit :(

Hey I've had my ranger for a little over 2 years now and I always new it didn't get the greatest gas mileage but it seems to be getting worse and worse... it gets about 10 to 13 right now and I always keep it at or below 2500 rpms. Does this seem like the right type of gas mileage it should be getting? it has 108K on it

Thanks,

Brett

That is way below normal. First, how are you calculating that MPG figure.

If I'm not mistaken your RPMs might be a issue... I know most of the engines should be running between 2500 and 3000... also do you have 4wd or 2wd?

It's 2WD... And if I am driving it normally it does usually get up to 2500 to 3000rpm but I've been driving it extremely conservative and it's still getting the same mileage.

X2 if you havent done a tune up recently do so. also there are a million factors that contribute to how good or bad your gas mileage is but your right foot is probably the biggest one. do you have oversized tires? are they inflated correctly? how are you calculating your mileage?

I am calculating my gas mileage how everyone calculates their gas mileage haha... Divide the amount of miles I got by the amount of gas I put in my tank. I don't have oversized tires and don't drive fast. I also just spent 1500 dollars on a bunch of shit. Oh and my tires were 15 pounds under the max pressure and I filled them up and I'm still getting shittyyyyy. Whatever I'll just have to deal with spending 200 bucks a month on gas

What are your driving conditions like? City, highway, stop and go, long trips? Obviously a lot of city with stop and go will lower your mileage. AC in city driving will eat up gas as well.

You didn't mention if you have done routine maintenance. Plugs, plug wires, air/fuel filter, PCV . Have you cleaned your MAF sensor (don't use brake cleaner). Sometimes a bad O2 sensor will impact fuel efficiency (the 3.0 has 3). Are you using E85 ethanol?

Are you towing anything? Carrying unnecessary weight in the bed?

also the EGR valve can be the culprit. mine is in need of cleaning on my 2000 ranger, am getting about 18-20 mpg but there are days were it goes down to 12-16 mpg. but that's mostly when am driving with a/c on(Sometimes i have no choice i do live in Texas!)

E85 costs more and gets less MPG. Believe me you won't save any money with that.
