Default Harmonic balancer question

I have a new balancer for a 3.0 and it looks like the front shaft where the oil seals rides is not machined all the way back so the seal will end up ridining on an unmachined area - is this normal?

Edit: I see there is a chrome sleeve one can install which the seal rides on that provides a smoother surface. Anyone gone this route?

You need to compare the new with the old and see, if its not turned like it should be, I'd send it back for another one that's right.

I called Dorman and they said that was OEM and theyt wear fine. I like the idea of the chrome sleeve and will probably use one on the old balancer...
