Default 1999 Ford ranger wont turn over

just bought a 1999 ford ranger xlt 4x4. v-6 3.o flexfuel. the check engine light came on and it will turn over but wont start. is this an electric fuel pump relay problem or a fuel pump? how do i know the difference between the two without spending the $ to replace both/

Might be wise to find out why the check engine light is on first. It could be an ignition or emission sensor problem. You'll have to find someone who can read your fault codes, then you'll get an idea where to go from there. If you can get the truck going, Autozone will do that free.

Yea get the code checked, or go to autozone and borrow/buy one of their OBDII scanners, you can plug it into the serial port under your dash and scan your codes on your own and it will tell you what the problem is.

well we changed the fuel filter and put new plugs and wires in it. gave it a good charge and it started. hooked it up and found there is a egr error and o2 sensor. took care of the misfiring error. Curious if all this could be because of the ignition? seem to be having issues ever since my anti theft light came on. ignition seems very touchy. after turning it off for two hours seemed to have the sme problem starting it again. it did howwever start after 4 attempts. I'm Stumped.

Well EGR, i'm not sure on the rangers, but on my tib its a "Exhaust Gas Return" valve, and was only like a 30$ part when my buddy had to replace his. As for the 02 sensor, that's an easy task, just unplug the old one, and use an 02 sensor puller, get the old sensor out, screw the new one in, and plug it back in.

Need to fill in some gaps here.

Has the check engine light gone out?

If not - if you replaced the EGR valve, check the DPFE switch for the EGR. There's a rubber vacuum hose on the valve, follow it to the front of the engine and you'll find a plastic switch. This fails more often than the EGR valve will, Check the hose also..the heat deteriorates them and they crack and leak. The ports under the EGR valve can coke up from the exhaust residue and cause the same problem. Either of those will set the CEL and cause the rough idle. A bad O2 sensor will do the same.

Have you confirmed you have an ignition problem?
