cost to r&r head gaskets
2001 B3000 with 35,000 mi (25,000 when I bought it). My mechanic (new to me but highly recommended) est. $1000 which included engine flush but not sure if it included any head work, although I doubt it needs head work, as it's never been mistreated or over heated. As a matter of fact, everything is fine except I have to add antifreeze once a month or so(?). Not even sure it's the head(s) gaskets as there's no leaks, no water in the oil etc. The mechanic said he does several checks before he starts tear down...9 hours labor. Also in my search one member mentioned using new head bolts.
I'm learning that a truck with practically no miles on it still breaks. At first I was shocked (haven't had anything repaired in like 100 years) at the price but after thinking about it the price didn't seem so bad. The head work ($200-$400 ?) might put it over the top. Any thoughts??

Re: cost to r&r head gaskets
I would find it hard to believe that it would need any kind of head work either, Now are we sure there is no leak external to the engine? Nothing around water pump, thermostat, freeze plug etc.? IF not and your adding coolant then it is going somewhere. You may not get anything in the oil, just depends on where the issue is could be going strait into the engine vs making it into the oil. Is there any kind of misfire or plugs look fried?
(as your finding cars that sit more than driven can do weird stuff)

Re: cost to r&r head gaskets
Even a very small outside leak would require adding coolant once a month. I'd make sure the timing cover, radiator, or hoses weren't leaking before I pulled the heads.

Yeah I would pressure test the cooling system and check for leaking. Way before thinking you have a head gasket problem.

Re: cost to r&r head gaskets
I really didn't think about a very small leak. I'll keep a closer eye on it and have it pressured tested. Might still be something small. Thanks for the added brain power.

Re: cost to r&r head gaskets
You can put dye into the system, then run it a day or two then get a black light and look around under and it will show the dye. Im not sure you can diy it or not but we used to do at the dealership but it costs.

Re: cost to r&r head gaskets
SpringtownFX4 everything is as normal for a 35,000 mi engine except for adding a little antifreeze. Matter of fact the worst thing that has ever happened is my floor mat rides up under the gas pedal and I only get about half power. Those kind of problems even I can fix!!!

Re: cost to r&r head gaskets
