Default 5r44e upgrades?

Can anything be done to improve the 5r44e's ability to hold power? Im hoping to turbo my truck within the next year but would like to avoid a trans swap. From what ive read they can probably handle about 300 lb/ft but i dont know how long that would last.

Bump. I've been told all the autos are nearly the same with different internals, could one be rebuilt with internals from a 5r55 or a mustang or other ford auto? If so which one?

5r55e from an Explorer would be your best bet. It has upgraded internals to handle the higher torque from the 4.0 V6. Also, would be a good idea to do the bolt-in Explorer 8.8 rear end. A shift kit and upgraded valve body would be a definite plus in the tranny as well.

Some newer 3.0's had the 5r55e. My old 05 did. Look for one of those to swap maybe? But a trans from a 4.0 won't bolt to your 3.0.

He can always swap the transmission bellhousings. They were made to be swappable.

I plan on doing an expo rear and a shift. What is the valve body?

Are there any markings or anything to find out which I have? Everything I read said 3.0s have the 5r44, but its an 08 and a sport so i imagine it might be.

I found out I had the 55e by looking at my door jam sides and comparing it to therangerstation.com's tech section

Yes, they are. That's why the 4r44e/5r44e/5r55e was used in 2.3, 4.0, and 3.0 motors. They have swappable bellhousings. Look it up.

Thanks for that link man! Pretty helpful. So if i'm understanding correctly they're essentially the same but with a different shift pattern?

They have slightly different torque specs, and the 5r55e is stronger than the 5r44e as to what it can handle. The thing is that the 5r44e/5r55e apply the overdrive band after 1st to create a false 2nd gear at full throttle. Other than that, the 4r44e shifts just like the 5r44e under light throttle. So if yours had the 5r44e/5r55e originally, and it should have since it's an 08', it would be best to put in a 5rxxe. Although, that shifting is done through the PCM, and people have back swapped transmissions to a 4rxxe and vice versa with no ill results, other than loosing that extra 2nd gear since the PCM isn't set up to do that extra shift.

So sayeth the guy with 7000 random posts. Crawl under your truck and take some goddamn pictures if you have to prove yourself wrong.

That's the 4r44e. Do you see that nice, black seam that runs around the whole transmission in front of the pan? Yea. That's the "random" bellhousing that "randomly" can swap between "random" transmissions on "random" forums. Jesus.

And another one in case that one wasn't enough. The pump bolts hold the bellhousing in. You pull the torque converter, remove the pump bolts and pump and the housing can come off with it. Boom.

There ya go, was that so hard? My old 05 is long gone. I realized the 3.0 motor is garbage and moved on to bigger and better. Couldn't be happier, the only thing worse than a 3.0 is the slush box automatic behind it.

Post count envy is a pain in the ass, ain't it?
