Re: Cruise Control Stopped Working
I had my cruise quit one day too. Here is what fixed mine, but not a gurantee for yours, since I don't know how long this recall ran, and heard of it from a friend.
My cruise control quit because the brake pressure switch (the switch that will turn off the cruise when you hit your brakes) was leaking brake fluid where it screwed into the master cylinder.
If you look at your brake fluid resevoir, directly in front of it (on mine, a 2001 by the way), there is an electrical sensor that screws into the master cylinder body. If you see ANY brake fluid around this connector, go to your local Ford dealer, and ask about a cruise control recall. They can tell you if your truck is up for the recall or not. If it is, they will replace it. If not, go to the parts counter, ask for the 'brake pressure switch' for the cruise system, pay them the $20 for it, and go home and do it yourself. You will also get a new wiring harness with it, that you might or might not need to use.
I installed the new brake pressure switch, and it started working again. The switch shorts out because it thinks the fluid leaking out is you pushin on the brake pedal to turn it 'off'.
