Default Temperature Gauge Issues

So I don't know much about trucks or my 1996 Ranger XLT 3.0, but a month or so ago my temperature gauge stopped working. I took it to Pep Boys and they told me the thermometer had entirely broken off, so they put a new one in. I noticed that even though before it broke the gauge would stay right in the middle, now it would maybe go up a quarter of the way and then fluctuate. I took it back to them and they told me I needed a new sensor, so I got that and it still is doing the same thing. What else do you think it is? I'm pretty pissed at them.

I am having the same or similar problem also. I have read through everything I could find here and still don't have an answer. I replaced the temperature sensor and tested the gauge by shorting the sensor lead to ground. Gauge maxed when I did this, but after replacing the sensor it still stays near cold all the time...

You might want to look for a shorted or broken wire/connector in the circuit...

I have a friend that works at ford and I asked him the question for you guys. He said that the temp gages in your clusters short will short the cirucit board and cause it to give false readings. He said to replace it.

Unfortunately replacing the cluster costs more than the truck.
