Default Choices 3.0 V6 or four cyliner????

I am torn between two vehicles I am looking at. I have to wonder why Ford discontinued the 3.0. This engine is in a 2008 Ranger with 8,000 miles which is just off lease. I am also looking at a 2010 with four cylinder engine. Both vehicles are identical otherwise being super cabs with automatic and air. I also have a question about buying the 4 Cyl. ..... can I order one with anything other than the 4.10 ratio rear axle? I am interested in fuel economy. My current ride, a Ranger XLT with 4.0 V6 is getting tired. I bought it new in Oct. 89 ($28,500.00 then!) and it has 350,000 Km's (210,000 miles}. Body is shot. Opinions regarding the two engines?

Yeah. 2.3 Duratech. Anybody that thinks the 3.0 is better has never driven one, raced one, or lived with one. 26 mpg is about the max you can get with a 3.0, while the 2.3 will do 30 or more, and deliver better performance.

I have both engines in 2 trucks and I like the 3.0 better.

Yes, isn't it a sad commentary on our automobile manufacturers. In 1990 the price was $28,000.00 yet now I can buy the same thing in 2010 for $20,000.00. I have asked many why but finally got what I believe is the correct answer. In Canada we got charged more because our wages and standard of living were higher so they "charges what the market would bear". As recently as two years ago a friend purchased a loaded Toyota "TRD" 4X4 full sized truck in the USA and brought it home. After all taxes and fees he saved $15,000.00. Now the car dealers are trying to stop Canadians from buying across the border by refusing to honour warrantys on those vehicles. So much for living in a free society. Thanks for the info guys. I am more inclined to take the better fuel mileage so probably will go with the four. I have fed my 1990 Ranger 210,000 miles worth of fuel (4.0) so will try using a little less. Dave

my dad has a 2.3 and i have the 3.0. i learned how to drive in the 2.3 and yea the 3.0 has more torque and H.P. my truck can tow the boat my dads 2.3 cant. and the diff are the same. gas i got 17 mpg for the first time a week ago. only took a year to learn to slow down lol i usually get 15 mpg. 2.3=good gas mpg 3.0=yea not so good. 2.3 though is a great motor and last forever and so does the 3.0. you cant go wrong with either motor.

both engines are made very durable being ford truck engines, and both have been proven over time. the 3.0 might give you a little better performance but you'll get a little better mileage in the 2.3, depending on how you drive. i have a 3.0 myself and love it-to me its the best engine, pretty much in the middle of the 2.3 and 4.0

Well, I did go with the 4 banger. I just got back from the dealer. It will be in in about six weeks. I ordered the XL package with 4 cylinder, five speed manual, air, cruise and tilt. Interesting that I could have gotten a "Sport" model with more options if I wanted to take the 4.0 L V6. Havin' fun!!! Dave
