Default ABS light on after rotors and pads...

I recently replaced my pads and rotors and now my ABS light comes on after about 3-4 min of driving or maybe once I hit a certain speed. There aren't any other issues though, no pulling or acting up of any sorts just the light comes on. I am considering selling soon so I would like to get the issue resolved before hand. Any suggestions where to start? Thanks.

Did the rotors you put on it have the correct reluctor/ tone ring on them? Did you damage the ABS sensor somehow?

Is the reluctor or tone ring something that is part of the rotor? I bought aftermarket "OEM" rotors online, so there certainly could have been some compatibility issues. I read somewhere that the abs sensor somehow adjusts itself to the wear of the rotor and when the rotors are replaced the sensor is no-longer in sync because of the new thickness or something like that??? Is there any truth to this?

Yes the ring is part of the rotor, sometimes aftermarket or even OEM don't have ring on them at all and so ermines they are just wrong. As for the sensor compensating for wear, that's wrong, the ring doesn't wear and there is no contact between it and the sensor.

Hmm. OK, What does the ring look like? Is it on the inside of the hat on the rotor?

It's right inside the rotor on the inside, near where the rotor slides on the spindle. It is a ring that has multiple slits in it. If you got aftermarket rotors, they probably did not include rings or were for non-ABS models. Also, ensure no debris is on the ring if it is there, or between it and the sensor. The sensors can get messy too.

If I am not mistaken 2000 Rangers only have rear antilock brakes that is all mine has and it is a two wheel drive supercab with Vulcan motor. Check fluid when I bought mine abs light was on added fluid and all was fine. Hope this helps

OK I'll pop a wheel off and take a look. Can this ring be added if it's not there?

I think you'd be better off buying ABS rotors instead of trying to add the ring. Not sure if it's possible or not. Also as said above, if the level is low, it can trigger that light as well. In addition, the speed/ABS sensor on top of the rear differential could be the culprit, but not likely if this occurred immediately after brake servicing.

no it can not be added it made into the back of the rotor and even if it is there if it's bent in any way it will also trip your light, I had this very same issue after I had my rotors turned
