Question High Idle problems

96 Ford Ranger 6cyl 3.0 w/ 117,000 miles. Started to idle high at 2000 to 3000. Sometimes it comes down to normal, sometimes not. Noticed I could literary take my foot of the gas pedal when doing 40 or 50 and it would not slow down. Be nice for cruise control but I don't have that feature.

Changed the Idle Air Control Unit with no changes. Computer thinks all is fine since it's not putting out any codes.

Had a friend perform a diagnosis w/ scanner. When at normal idle (1000) he noticed the IAC reading at 0%. He thought that was odd.

One other oddity I notice, if I put a load, like turn on the AC, idle comes way down. Should be the other way around.

I'm starting to suspect the Computer module is faulty .
Any ideas?

Make sure the the IAC that you replaced was the correct one. this may sound stupid but it happened to me and I spent six months trying to figure it out. The part store gave me the incorrect one.

If you are sure the AIC isnt the problem, check for leaks in your exhaust...same thing happened to me, my y-pipe and exhaust was all loose....Now my truck idles fine.

i would just start looking for leaks in general, vaccum hoses, intake leak, exhaust leak. let us know if that doesn't help at all... if not it may be something mis measuring the incoming air like the MAF

I'm pretty sure it's the correct IAC unit I replaced. I had a similar problems about 5 years ago and replaced it then; it fixed the problem.

As to leaks in my exhaust, I don't see any of that. Plus if anything was loose I'd hear some kind of rattling.

I did try to clean the throttle area but it was pretty clean. Very little black smudge showed on my rag. (I'm pretty diligent on replacing the air filter when needed).

Also And, as to the MAF wouldn't I get an "engine light" and p code if somethin' was amiss.

I think I may attempt to adjust the idle control screw. Will do some research before that.
Will keep this post updated as I progress or retrogress.. whatever the case may be.

sometimes a code will set for a MAF, not always though. but yes, most of the time it will set a code. have you done a vacuum test yet, or are you assuming?

as for the p code (aka DTC) those are for telling you what the problem is, not what the cause of the problem generally. at least that has been my experience, cuz there is many times a blown fuse, bad connection, or sometimes the sensor is actually bad.

I'm having the same exact problem (on the same exact truck) and I hear a rattling when the engine is making the loud idling noise. Could that be the loose muffler assembly or what?

Check all the bolts in your exhaust system, and look for holes while you're down there...The y-pipe especially.

That would be the thing to do. A vacuum test, that is. Right now I am going by sound. I guess if there was a vacuum leak I assume I'd hear a big sucking sound. Will follow up on that more diligently

Anyway, I have a friend helping me trying to solve this problem. He's a mechanic and smog certified. We took the MAF sensor out, cleaned it, reinstalled it and plugged in the scanner.
No changes.
I did write down some info from the scanner this time. Don't know how it may help.

1) We checked the MAF voltage at idle. Scanner says it should be between .6 and 1 volt. Reading was 1.17 volts.

2) Checked the TPS with KOEO ( Keys on Engine Off). Closed throttle was .89 volts and wide open throttle was 4.67 volts. That seemed OK

3) Engine Load at idle should be between 20 and 40 percent. Reading was 18 percent.

4) Not sure about this one reading, but Barrel Sensor was 146 Hz, says it should be 159 Hz. I guess the computer thinks I'm driving 4000 feet above sealevel.

In any case the last thing I want to do is start replacing sensors. Did that with the IAC and struck out.

Well, that's all I have right now. I appreciate all the input I've received from this forum.
so far.

Question My 1994 ford ranger high idles mostly between changing gears and acts like I have cruise control witch I don't have and when I come to a complete stop the idle comes down. I also have a bad smell of gas all the time.

----------

Well . Just found out that I have low fuel pressure. at 30 and fluctuating, that's not good. That pump is outta here. I wonder if that's why i'm Having some idle problems guess I'm going to find that out. But the high idle has got me stumped at excelerating and and changing gears. When the truck is at a stop and sitting still at a light it stops. The throttle is not sticking.

----------

OK. One more question. What does the ( Bimetal sensor ) really sensor.? I was reading about it that it may cause a lack of power witch I also have been experiencing lately and there is really no way to determine if there bad. The Ford part guy did'nt even know what I was asking for. I do know this much they have some thing to do with vacume. More info on this would be great.

I bought the truck from the OO in 8/1/2013 for $900. It had a burnt exhaust valve. I just threw some heads on it(5/1/2014). Ford has many good engines, the 3.0 Vulcan is not one of them. I bought it for the price.

Bumping this back up.

I've got an 04 with the 3.0 motor and it has recently started idling high most of the time. When I start it, it hits over 2000rpm and stays around 1800rpm while in park. Once I put it in drive it goes down to 1000rpm which still is a little high compared to where it was before the problem. Also, when I'm driving it is turning a slightly faster rpm than normal.

Any ideas??
