Without knowing what's actually wrong, we can't really give you much of a good figure. There's sooooo many variables in this. Pinion bearings? Carrier bearings? Axle bearings? Too much wear on the ring and pinion? If you choose to go to a shop to repair it, go to a dedicated shop for axles and transmissions....a driveline shop. They generally will know exactly what you're dealing with, without having to deal with people at a dealership or a no-name shop that that don't know what their talking about and will likely send it off to a specialty shop anyhow. Standard ring and pinion setup/carrier swap, at least for me, runs about $200 labor per axle plus cost of parts. That figure varies greatly shop to shop.

Cheapest bet no matter what: Low mile junkyard replacement axle. Prices can range as little as $100 and upwards of $350, and usually never more than $500(junkyards prices vary ALOT from yard to yard). Still cheaper than if they want to do a complete and total rebuild using new gears and bearing kits, plus cost of setup and other assiciated labor costs.
