Transmission
For the most part, no transmissions will swap over to the 4.0, how ever there are some exceptsion. A4LD’s have removable bellhousings so if you have an A4LD with your old engine, it may be possible to just swap the bellhousing, and be able to use the same transmission. Also, the 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern, so its possible to use the transmission from a 2.9 on a 4.0. However, this really isnt recommended. The 2.9 transmission will have different gear ration, and probably wont stand up to as much power or torque as one designed for the 4.0.
Something else to remember, if using an automatic transmission, dont forget to grab the transmission kickdown cable, as it may be different from what is currently in your truck.
If you have a manual transmission, then your pretty much out of luck. The manual transmissions used in Rangers have non-removable bellhousings, so only 2.9 or 4.0 specific manual transmissions will bolt onto a 4.0. Once again, the use of a 2.9 transmission is possible, but not really recommened.
