It should not be startable with the Bendix on the wrong side as the gear teeth could never mesh, so the torque of the starter would just grind metal to metal on the edge/whatever of the flywheel.
Have you tried a prybar? I think you may have some remnants of the bolts still in place that cause the starter to have to come out very 'squarely' or it will bind.
