Default PCV canister on side of crankcase HELP

Hello have a question regarding my 85 2.3 Ranger.
On the side of the motor, below the intake manifold is a/the pcv.... port. Plugged in is a tin canister with the PC valve between a hose that runs back into intake manifold.
I'm in understanding of its purpose, my concern is I was looking over the engine bay after buying this neglected truck. And saw the tin canister just laying there with the hoses disconnected. As well as a straight sight into the block.... I was able to press it all back together the way it belong but what keeps it in place...? The canister seems like it would bounce out or possibley blown out.... I d found no information so far.

Thanks for any replays or suggestions

**picter from internet. But canister is what I'm talking about
