The test I read of is to run the engine at idle, during hot weather, and wait. After the engine heats up, the coolant gauge getting above normal, you should hear the fan 'kick in' and make a lot more noise than normal. With a 4, you'd likely have to have the A/C engaged to develop enough heat to make it engage. In cool weather, the 4 barely puts out enough heat for the heater, though a good thermostat will get the coolant to 195F.

I think my problem is that the clutch is always engaged, not the other way around. That would cause the noise, right? It sounds like fan is running full blast as soon as I start it, and like you said, it doesn't get hot.

I'll try it some more today
